Icons of Design
Metal: brushed steel, Natural leather
The PK24 chaise longue chair stands out as perhaps the most recognisable chair in Fritz Hansen’s Poul Kjærholm’s collection. Inspired by the Rococo period and the French chaise longue, Kjærholm used steel to support a curvy, flowing form. He labelled it the ’Hammock Chair’ to stress that it functions by suspending the body between two points.
The PK collection includes chairs, stools, armchairs, sofas and beds.
A trained cabinetmaker who completed his studies at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, Poul Kjærholm had a particular interest in construction materials; especially steel, which he considered a material deserving the artistic respect that was commonly awarded to wood.
Poul Kjærholm initiated a collaboration with furniture manufacturer Ejvind Kold Christensen in 1955, and that collaboration continued for the rest of Kjærholm’s life with the two families remaining close to this very day.
Two years after the designer’s passing, the Kjærholm trustees entrusted Fritz Hansen with the production and sales of ‘The Kjærholm Collection’– designs developed by Poul Kjærholm from 1951 to 1967.
Fritz Hansen is honoured to continue production to this day and to distribute Poul Kjærholm’s furniture to architects and private customers around the world.
Fritz Hansen history began in the 19th century. Characterized by its innovativeness, high quality of products and unique craftsmanship, this Danish brand produces icons of design since day one. From the bentwood and metal furniture from the 30s, through legendary chairs and sofas of Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm from the half and end of the 20th century to contemporary designs of Jaime Hayon. The philosophy of the brand is to create timeless designs that exude luxury and elegance.
